Stremio addons in the browser: a safe, legal guide

Stremio addons have become a popular way to plug catalogs, metadata and subtitles into a media player. If you'd rather use Stremio addons in the browser, without installing a desktop app, you have two main options: Stremio's own web app, or a browser extension that speaks the same addon protocol. This guide explains what these addons actually are, how they work technically, how to use them in Chrome, and, most importantly, how to choose safe, legal ones and avoid the risky ones.

What a Stremio addon actually is

A Stremio addon isn't a program you install on your computer. It's a small web service that answers a handful of JSON requests. Every addon publishes a manifest.json that declares its name, version and what it can provide. According to Stremio's own addon SDK documentation, an addon can offer any of these resources:

  • Catalogs: lists of titles to browse and search.
  • Metadata: details for a title, like description, cast and episodes.
  • Streams: where a title can be played from.
  • Subtitles: subtitle files for a video.
  • Addon catalogs: lists of other addons.

When you "install" an addon, you're really just giving your player the address of that manifest. The player then asks the addon's server for catalogs, details, streams or subtitles as you browse. That has two consequences worth understanding:

  1. The addon's operator sees your requests. Every time you open a catalog or a title, the request goes to their server, along with your IP address, like any web request.
  2. The addon decides what you get. A metadata addon gives you posters and plots. A stream addon gives you playback links, and where those links lead is entirely up to the person who runs it.

How to use Stremio addons in the browser

Option 1: Stremio Web

Stremio runs an official web version at web.stremio.com. It works in Chrome and other modern browsers and can sync your addon collection through a Stremio account. It's the closest experience to the desktop app without installing it.

Option 2: A Stremio-compatible browser extension

Because the addon protocol is open, other players can read the same manifests. Better Stream is a free Chrome extension that installs Stremio-compatible addons alongside its own plugin format. Here's how that differs:

Stremio Web Better Stream (extension)
Runs in A browser tab A browser extension (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera)
Account Optional Stremio account for sync No account at all
Where your addon list lives Your Stremio account, if signed in Locally in your browser
Stremio-compatible addons Yes Yes
M3U playlists and EPG for Live TV Through addons Yes, built in
Subtitle formats Depends on source SRT, VTT and ASS, with charset detection
Telemetry See Stremio's own policy None

Both are reasonable choices. Pick based on whether you want an account-synced setup or a local-first one.

Installing an addon in Better Stream, step by step

  1. Install Better Stream from the Chrome Web Store. The how it works section shows the three-step setup.
  2. Open the Sources tab. The player starts empty; it has no content of its own.
  3. Paste the addon's manifest URL (it usually ends in manifest.json), or use the repository/manifest install flow for a plugin repository.
  4. Review what it provides. Check whether it supplies catalogs, metadata, streams or subtitles, and that it matches what the publisher claims.
  5. Browse. The addon's catalogs appear in your library, with continue watching, My List and search across everything you've installed.

Updates are one click, and duplicate protection stops the same addon being added twice.

This is the part most guides skip. Addons are third-party services. Neither Stremio nor Better Stream reviews or controls what they serve, and you're responsible for what you install and how you use it. Here's a practical checklist.

Prefer addons with a clear, legitimate purpose

The safest addons are ones whose purpose is obviously legal:

  • Metadata and catalog addons that show posters, plots, cast and trending lists.
  • Subtitle addons for videos you're entitled to watch.
  • Addons for open or public-domain sources, such as public archives.
  • Addons for your own media, for example ones that connect to a media server you run at home.
  • Addons for services you already pay for, where the service officially supports that kind of access.

Red flags

Skip any addon that:

  • Promises current cinema releases or premium channels for free. Unlicensed content is the main legal risk, and those addons tend to disappear or turn malicious.
  • Asks for passwords, payment details or accounts for other services. A real catalog addon never needs your bank card.
  • Comes from an anonymous source with no description, no repository and no way to contact the author.
  • Tells you to install extra software or disable security features to make it work.
  • Redirects you to download files instead of playing in the player.

Check the source

Look for a public code repository, a clear description, a named maintainer and recent updates. An open-source addon you can inspect is easier to trust than a closed URL passed around a forum.

An addon protocol is just plumbing. Using addons is generally legal; what matters is the content they deliver. Streaming pirated films through an addon is no more legal than streaming them on a pirate website, and in some countries it carries real penalties. If you want legal free films, our guide to free legal movie streaming lists services that still work in 2026.

Addons, plugins and playlists: what's the difference?

People use these words interchangeably, but in Better Stream they mean slightly different things:

  • Stremio-compatible addon: a web service described by a manifest.json, following the Stremio addon protocol. It can supply catalogs, metadata, streams and subtitles.
  • Better Stream plugin: Better Stream's own source format (a .bsp.json file). It can do the same jobs and can also bring live channels. A starter repository is included so you can see how plugins work.
  • M3U playlist: a plain list of live channel links, usually from your TV or IPTV provider. Pair it with an XMLTV guide for a program grid. Our M3U player for Chrome guide covers that setup.

All three end up in the same library and the same player, and the same rule applies to all of them: only add sources you trust and are entitled to use.

Permissions: what the browser can and can't see

When you install any streaming extension, check its permissions. Better Stream asks for access to all sites, which Chrome describes as reading and changing data on websites. It needs that to fetch catalogs, manifests and streams from whatever addon servers you choose, and to set request headers those sources require. It doesn't read or collect your browsing data, and there's no telemetry. Our privacy policy explains each permission in plain language, and our article on private streaming with no account goes deeper.

You can limit any extension's site access from Chrome's extension settings, as described in Google's help page on managing extensions. Just note that a player that can't reach the addon's server can't load its catalog.

Troubleshooting Stremio addons in the browser

"Failed to install" or nothing happens. Open the manifest URL in a new tab. If it doesn't return JSON, the addon is offline or the link is wrong.

The catalog loads, but nothing plays. The addon provides catalogs or metadata only, or its stream links are broken. That's the addon, not the player.

Duplicate titles everywhere. Two addons provide the same catalog. Disable one.

Subtitles are out of sync. Use the player's timing offset. Better Stream remembers your choice per title.

Key takeaways

  • A Stremio addon is a small web service described by a manifest.json. It can supply catalogs, metadata, streams and subtitles.
  • You can use Stremio addons in the browser with Stremio Web or a compatible extension like Better Stream.
  • The addon operator sees your requests and decides what content you get, so choose carefully.
  • Prefer metadata, subtitle, public-domain and personal-media addons; avoid anything promising free premium content.
  • Using addons is legal; streaming pirated content through them isn't.

Looking for a Stremio alternative for Chrome that keeps everything local, needs no account, and adds Live TV with a program guide? Add Better Stream and install the addons you trust. The FAQ covers how sources work, and you can contact us if an addon won't install. If you watch live channels, the Live TV guide works with your own M3U playlists.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Stremio offers an official web version, and players that support the Stremio addon protocol, such as the Better Stream extension, can install the same addons.
